New Blog

The time seemed right to timidly try my hand at blogging. Go here, to The Ashen Ledger, and read about my weekly trips to the New York Zoos, animal stories from New Hampshire, see some pictures eventually, and probably other faunal stuff, who knows.

New Band

White Hinterland - Phylactory Factory Album CoverI've joined up with my dear friends Casey Dienel and Matt Meyer and officially joined their band White Hinterland. I'm extremely excited to be out of my bedroom and collaborating on some new music and playing shows and touring.

I had done the album art for Phylactory Factory, which just came out on Dead Oceans, and in addition to playing saw, banjo, percussion, etc i'll also be doing all the art direction/t shirt design/posters/stage set design/lighting/etc.

we're playing a show at the Cake Shop in NYC this coming saturday, may 3rd. It's the 3 year anniversary of the CS and our friend at Chouette has helped put together quite a lineup, and graciously invited us to take part. look at this!

upcoming show in seattle

well the j&l group show at marcia wood was a success, and this coming month the show will be traveling to seattle to be installed at the okok gallery. the opening will be on march 10th, from 6-8pm.

hmm. i'm trying to think of anything else, but things for the rest of the year are still being worked out.

new book
(pardon the science lesson)

i recently finished a new book, the first in a series of volumes about bats. bats are really amazing creatures and thinking about echolocation and how developed and how mind blowingly advanced that technology is, it's staggering, let alone the ability to fly on top of that. the book is called CHIROPTERA, which is the name of the order of mammals that includes bats. within the order of chiroptera, there are two suborders which still exist, megachiroptera and microchiroptera. megabats are large, tropical fruit eaters like flying foxes, while microbats are what you probably think of when you hear "bat", small, echolocating insectivores active at night. this first volume is a brief introduction to microchiroptera, and includes sections on eating habits, enemies, roosting, as well as portraits of a few species. you can see it here and buy it here, or at these bookstores.

thank you's

huge thanks to melissa, melinda, chris, brandon, tesni, liana, catherine, nicole, matt, joel, andrew and marty for their generosity, hospitality, help, friendship and attendance of the opening at nonesuch earlier this month. i did not take any photographs of the show but i am working on pulling some some from the opening and i'll scan the work once it comes down.

north/south at relative theory

from the african coast to the arctic circle. in december i will be debuting some new works at relative theory in norfolk, va. these drawings deal with animals living and dying in the most extreme environments on earth, the north and south polar ice caps. seals, polar bears, walrus, penguins, whales, skua, and foxes are among the creatures who inhabit and struggle in these regions. temperatures rarely climb above 0°f, seriously. i can't even imagine going swimming. big ups to those crazy people in the polar bear club. and check out this polar bear club too.
the show runs from december 1 through january 2. opening reception december 1st, 7-10pm. there will be a musical performance at 9pm, food and drink provided.

new clothes

i just posted a new shirt in the shop. it's the first of a series of shirts that come from the [gull cries] stuff. more to come in time for the holidays!
also an adorable new skirt from melinda melmoth here.
and i need a new pair of jeans.

[gull cries] at nonesuch

the countdown is on, two weeks until my show [gull cries] opens at nonesuch in richmond, virginia. the show is new drawings and embroideries of wildlife on and around the cape verde islands off africa's northwest coast. sea birds, whales, sea turtles, giant lizards, and bats living in threatened isolation. this show is dedicated to and was inspired by two great friends, brandon carmo and christopher hillman, both of whom are of cape verdean decent and both of whom at times feel too geographically distant and isolated from me, but also flourishing in their own right. many thanks to melinda melmoth for the concept and the name (we watch lost on dvd together and she needs the captions and they denote important sound elements with the brackets, [disembodied whispers], [twig snaps], [gull cries])
the show will be up from november 3rd through the first week in december. opening reception november 3rd, 7-10pm. i will be playing some music with friends at 9pm. there will be food and drink.

a pleasant surprise

i almost never answer my phone, at all, but especially when it is a number i don't recognize. it's irrational but my near crippling paranoia is no secret. but when i saw in my call log two missed calls from a 415 number the other morning, something made me dial the number back. it turns out it was some friends from new york, derek and lauren, who moved out to san francisco earlier this year and started up a wonderful online store called the curiosity shoppe, as well as opened the hardware store gallery. between being adorable, running these businesses and calling me on the telephone, these two also host amazing looking craft workshops, field trips and other events with the curiosity guild, and have a craft blog, plus do their own stuff, plus who knows what else. hugely inspiring and exciting stuff. hopefully i will get the chance to do some work with them in the near future. check out their things, the shoppe is filled with great stuff. i'm firing up my paypal account right now!

more upcoming shows in december

i will be having pieces in two group shows this winter, an animal themed group at nonesuch, as well as a group show at the marcia wood gallery in atlanta, georgia curated by jason and leanne from j&l books. many thanks to them!
also i will be having a solo show of new work at norfolk cultural bastion relative theory. more info coming soon.

montreal post script

despite not going to a single record store, nor gallery, i did come to the conclusion that montreal rules and i love it there and my friends are awesome and short shorts an secret swimming pools are/were the best new things this summer.

music page will arrive soon

Salad Days at Artists Space

thanks to everyone who came out to see 's installation and performance at Artists Space this past tuesday. a huge thanks to Jennifer Moon and Hillary Wiedemann, as well as all the other artists, curators, AS faculty and interns for their patience and assistance. the show is great and the opening was a blast. we'll be doing a closing ceremony performance on august 4th, so if you didn't get to see the first one, come to that one.

***ALSO there is a pot-luck "meet and greet" with all the artists and curators this wednesday the 19th from 6-8pm at the gallery. check the AS website for the full deal, plus summer gallery hours.

go to e-liz's flickr to see some pictures (the one on the right is hers) from the opening. more to come.

shirts by melinda melmoth

i'm currently showcasing seven hand embroidered t-shirts by my lady friend melinda in my shop (click here to see them). melinda's drawings have that childlike confidence/naivete that art students across the globe are clawing backwards to recreate, except hers, like herself are true, honest, funny, and thoroughly free of pretense. she's long been one of my favorite artists, and i hope you will think so too. our book collaboration, mothden will hopefully be finished by autumn, we're currently looking for funding.

Montréal ici je viens!

ok i don't speak french so hopefully that says what i want it to. this weekend i'll be in montreal for the first time in at least a decade with my friends maggie, liat and jason. i'll be looking at galleries, browsing record stores and seeing what all the fuss is about. open to suggestions...

the maiden voyage has set sail!

i just finished my new book, the maiden voyage. this book presents drawings i made to document a 3 week adventure across europe, my first time overseas. copenhagen, berlin, prague, zurich, london, it's all in there and then some. it's 54 pages, hand perfect bound, with a screen printed cover (silver on blue). limited to 140 lovingly handcrafted copies, check it out in the books section and/or in the shop.

GAK ATTACK (albany punkers)

3 new books
i am at this moment assembling my latest book, the maiden voyage, which should be available by the end of the week. look here for information
in addition, i am working on two collaborative books which should be published by the end of the summer. the first, titled mothden, is a book with one of my favorite people, melinda melmoth. it will span a wide range of topics from undersea life to seal and heidi klum's baby. the other book,en titled bubo bubo, will be a collection of drawings of or relating to owls by myself and bi coastal playboy joel statz.

shows in VA
this autumn and winter i will be spending quite a bit of time in the beautiful state of virginia. i've been invited to take part in a group show being curated by the illustrious max fenton, to be staged in charlottesville (with a possible tour of duty to follow). in november i will be having a solo show of drawings and embroideries at nonesuch in richmond, and in december i will be showing a different body of work at the relative theory gallery in norfolk. more info on all of these as it becomes available. also be on the lookout for me socializing at harrisonburg's JMÜberhouse, camelot.

quiet time
other than the bad business show this weekend, i have no other musical performances scheduled at this moment. i recently had to take a break from sparrows swarm and sing to deal with some personal issues, though their upcoming record will feature me on saw, bells, and assorted other instruments. things with my other unspeakable project are beginning to move again after a very thorough exploration of the continental united states followed by a much needed period of rest. new records and upcoming shows will be announced soon.

if you notice any broken links or things not behaving properly on this site, let me know!
